The Rooftop Garden of the University of Warsaw Library (BUW) is much more than just an urban park; it is a feat of landscape engineering. With an area spanning over a hectare, it is recognized as one of the largest rooftop gardens in Europe.
A Unique and Bold Design
Designed by architect Irena Bajerska, the garden is a true green extension of the building, conceived as a relaxation space for the residents of Warsaw. The design perfectly integrates modern structures (steel bridges, pergolas, and glass walls) and an abundance of vegetation.
The Botanical and Thematic Richness
The garden stands out due to its botanical richness and its thematic approach, divided into two distinct and complementary levels:
- The Play of Water: The central element is a stream that cascades from the upper part to flow into a pool with fish. This system creates a soothing background sound and a visual effect of a river flowing through the architecture.
- Colors and Themes: The upper level is divided into four thematic landscape zones (Gold, Silver, Purple, Green). As a result, this organization creates a chromatic spectacle that evolves continuously from spring to autumn.

Exploring the BUW Garden in Warsaw: Two-Level Itinerary
The BUW Rooftop Garden is designed as a two-stage journey, offering radically different atmospheres. To fully enjoy this oasis, we recommend starting from the bottom.
The Lower Level: Calm and Reflection
- The Water Element: This area is dominated by the aquatic element. Furthermore, there is a large pool sheltering fish and an artificial stream that cascades from the upper level, creating a soothing soundscape.
- The Plants: Indeed, the vegetation here is more luxuriant. It is mainly composed of shrubs, climbing plants, and water lilies, offering a striking contrast with the steel and glass of the building.
- Architecture: It is also here that you can admire the stone walls and bridges, which serve as support for the suspended gardens.
he Crossing/Passage: Ascent Towards the Light
The Upper Level: The Chromatic Garden
- Color Themes: The upper level is divided into four thematic landscape zones. Each possesses its own dominant color palette: the Gold garden, the Silver garden, the Purple garden, and the Green garden. This visual delight evolves throughout the seasons.
- Openness: Unlike the lower level, the top is airy and offers the great reward: access to the observation decks.
